This 85-minute special spends a week-in-the-life of a group of sixth-graders at the Mount Nittany Middle School in State College, Pennsylvania to reveal what really matters to twelve-year-olds. This is the secret world of the twelve-year-old. Boyfriends and girlfriends. Feuds and tantrums. Cargo pants and spaghetti straps. It's a world entirely misunderstood by adults, with its own set of rules and bizarre logic. An age where everything is larger than life.
PLANET TWELVE reveals that fitting in is what matters most to twelve-year-olds. At Mount Nittany, the children identify each other by GROUPS. There are THE POPULARS, of which Ebony is a member, THE NORMALS, where Juliya resides, THE JOCKS, which count Joe as the star attraction, THE SKATERS, which Colin is anxious to join, and THE LONERS, where Kyle finds himself. Part of popularity comes simply through wearing the right clothes. As Stefanie, the most popular girl in the class, puts it as she shops at the local mall: "If you don't dress right you don't fit in and if you don't fit in you can't get popular. That's my philosophy." This is definitely an unusual break from most documentaries!!
